Whether we work from the office or home, employees crave and deserve a comfortable workstation. Here’s how you can convert your spare room into a mobile workplace as you work from home. Of course, ergonomics is always essential when designing a space where you’ll spend most of your day working. Adequate equipment spacing, proper desk posture, and correct chair height are significant aspects to creating a streamlined workspace.
First of all, set your devices straight. Your keyboard and mouse should be on the same surface and within easy reach. Keep the wrists straight while using the mouse or typing. Without your upper arms, close the body and hands at the elbow level. Adjust the mouse’s sensitivity and use keyboard shortcuts; invest in a headset if you use the telephone frequently. Keep the compact monitor riser directly in front of you and an arm’s length away. The brightest lighting fixture should be on the side for comfortable viewing, and the screen should be at eye level.
Ensure the desk has space to rest your thigh, knees, and feet. Place sturdy blocks under the desk legs to bring up a low desk, or raise the chair for a high desk. If needed, use a footrest to support the feet and use padding in case of sharp edges. In case you don’t have a footrest, use a small stool or chair instead.
Use adjustable chairs that offer a comfortable posture, support the lower back and prevent pressure on the thighs. It should have an adjustable lumbar support backrest, height, armrest and seat pan without using tools. Wrist rests, and foldable laptop stands are also recommended to promote a neutral position for the wrists, such as a cushioned mousepad or a movable and padded wrist rest.
Windows and overhead lighting aren’t ideal for working on the computers, nor should their reflections flash on the screen. Instead, use darker background screens, buy foldable laptop stands, use curtains and blinds, use task lighting, remove unnecessary fluorescent bulbs and lighting fixtures, position the compact monitor riser screen alongside the window to avoid direct light. Also, glare screens are excellent solutions to prevent screen reflection and protect your eyes from constant strain.
If needed, buy ergonomic devices that help to work on the laptop comfortably. If you’re looking for guidance regarding an ergonomic sit-stand workstation, contact us at ErgoEquip.
